If you’re out and about in Bend, you might notice some excellently trimmed dogs. These canine cuties might have been beautified by Jeff Perks, a Navy vet and former substance abuser who has found his life’s calling as a pet groomer.
“The way I feel about grooming is unlike anything else I have ever done. After nine years I still get excited to go to work. It has tapped into an artistic side I didn’t even know that I had. Learning grooming was the most difficult thing I have ever done. But I was and still am determined to be the best I can be at it.”
Jeff has loved Bend since he arrived 2.5 years ago. “There’s an energy in Bend that agrees with mine. It has felt like home from the start, more than any other place I’ve ever lived.” When asked about his favorite place here, Jeff can’t name just one: “I love Paulina, Tumalo Falls, and the entire China Hat area to name a few.”
Jeff hopes to buy property somewhere near Bend to build his forever home. He counsels friends to “remember how lucky you are to get to live in the most beautiful place on Earth. The rest will fall into place.” His biggest worry is that Bend will lose the small town feel that makes it so special today.
As a former substance abuser, Jeff wants folks to know that there is life after recovery. “I have been free of substance abuse for over ten years and have found that dog and cat grooming is what I was meant to do with my life. I get so much more than earning a living from it.”
Jeff is a big believer in second chances. “Because of my past, I see everything as a second chance. I am living as I think is right and not wasting any time. I feel so grateful for everything and anything in my life.”
Jeff practices his art at Muddy Paws Bathhouse,www.muddypawsbend.com.
